Sonny: “When I see the fans smile, I’m smiling as well”

Fri 20 July 2018, 13:52|Tottenham Hotspur

Heung-Min Son says he wants to give something back ‘on and off the pitch’ after signing a new deal at the Club.

‘Sonny’ put pen to paper on a new contact, which will run until 2023, on Friday.

The South Korea forward, 26, has scored 47 goals in 140 appearances for us since signing from Bayer Leverkusen in August, 2015.

“It feels great,” said Sonny after signing his new deal. “I’ve learned so many things in the last three years and we’re all looking forward.

“We deserve to win something and deserve to make some history. It’s time to do it and to believe in ourselves. I’m always positive with the lads and looking forward to playing again in the Premier League and the Champions League.”

Our supporters have always been close to his heart and it’s a feeling reciprocated, so much so that fans adapted one of the all-time famous terrace chants ‘Nice One Cyril’ sung to 1970s great Cyril Knowles to ‘Nice One Sonny’ last season.

The fans are amazing and I hope next season, with the new stadium, the fans will be amazing again

“Without the fans, I’m a very small player,” he said. “They support me home and away, it doesn’t matter where I am, when I play for South Korea in the World Cup they support me.

“I’m really thankful for that. I want to give that back on and off the pitch. When I see the fans, I’m really happy, when they see me and I see the kids and they are smiling, I’m smiling as well. I know how this feels.

“The fans are amazing and I hope next season, with the new stadium, the fans will be amazing again. I’m so excited to play there, to get three points and celebrate together with the fans.

"I hope we always have positive results and good energy with the fans together.”
