Keepers salute world champion Hugo

Mon 16 July 2018, 16:11|Tottenham Hotspur

Our goalkeepers have lined up to praise Hugo Lloris after our number one lifted the World Cup on Sunday.

Hugo has been a mentor to the other talented stoppers we have at the club and they were delighted to see him become the first player in our history to claim the prestigious trophy following France’s 4-2 win over Croatia.

Here’s what some of our keepers had to say about the player and the person who has become a father figure since joining us in 2012…

Winning prizes is one thing but winning the World Cup is another so this is a massive achievement.

“It’s amazing and I’m so pleased for him. He was very disappointed after the final at the last Euros so, two years later, to win the World Cup is amazing. I’ve been at these tournaments with Holland and, although we missed out on the final in 2014, I know the process of being that long way away from home in a different country and just focusing on game after game, trying to reach the pinnacle.

“To reach the final and win it is mentally and emotionally very tough. That is why you are a professional football player and I’m so happy for him. Hugo is very focused and is someone who can deal with that type of pressure. One mistake happened (in the final) but for me he was one of the best keepers of the whole World Cup and he can look back at an amazing tournament. It’s not something that happens that often – winning prizes is one thing but winning the World Cup is another so this is a massive achievement.”

He’s an example for everyone here. All the goalkeepers here are delighted.

“I texted him last night after the match. I’m very happy for him and very proud of him. He’s an example for everyone here. All the goalkeepers here are delighted.

“He’s showed once again that he’s a top goalkeeper, a top professional and a very good guy. It’s difficult to have all those characteristics in one person but Hugo has everything and that’s why I’m happy for him. He played a fantastic tournament but the most important thing is that he and his team-mates won the trophy.”

It’s superb to have a role model like Hugo, who now has a World Cup winner’s medal.

“It’s unbelievable. Not many players, let alone goalkeepers, get a chance to play in the World Cup. And to win it is unbelievable so it’s something to aspire to.

“As young goalkeepers, he gives us a lot of advice and helps us so much. He’s great to learn from and it’s superb to have a role model like Hugo, who now has a World Cup winner’s medal. He fully deserves that honour and it’s pleasing for everyone here at Spurs to see him lift the trophy.”

It’s an inspiration for us, the way he works hard.

“I’m really pleased for Hugo because he’s a great guy and helps us a lot. Now he has this achievement, he can pass down lots more advice. It’s an inspiration for us, the way he works hard and shows that if you do put in that hard graft then you can achieve great success.

“He’s always focused and looking to improve. Even now he’s won the World Cup he will still come back and try to work on things he can improve on. He’s always trying to better himself and us as well. He played really well throughout the tournament and I’m thrilled for him.”
