Liverpool v Spurs - preview panel

King, Molby and Smithy from Soccer AM preview Anfield clash

Sat 03 February 2018, 10:12|Tottenham Hotspur

What a line-up we have for our Anfield preview panel - legendary former skipper Ledley King, Liverpool legend Jan Molby and celebrity guest fan Smithy from Soccer AM!

The legend - Ledley King

World-class defender who needs no introduction, one-club man, modern great, Ledley made 323 appearances for us between 1999-2012, many as captain, lifting the League Cup in 2008. Now a Club Ambassador, he made his debut at Anfield in May, 1999.

"I expect an open, exciting game. Both teams like to press high, try to force errors and are very capable on the counter-attack. It's all about which team can dictate their style on the game. Liverpool are at home and will definitely look to press and keep a high tempo. We have to be composed under pressure, look to beat their press and if we do that, there will be opportunities for us, I’m sure."

We blew them away at Wembley and it could be down to how the teams start the game.

The pundit - Jan Molby

Midfield maestro Jan was a member of the all-conquering Liverpool team of the 1980s, 292 appearances between 1984-95, three titles and the double in 1986, won 33 caps for Denmark and now a pundit for Danish TV, BBC and a columnist for the Liverpool Echo.

"It’s a massive game. Both teams are challenging for the top four and with Spurs, that doesn’t surprise me, I really like Spurs as a team. At the same time, you also know if you catch Liverpool on a good day – which you did at Anfield last season – then you are in trouble. Liverpool play with risk, more than Spurs, but they have to. One to 11, Spurs are probably a better team, so Liverpool have to take bigger risks with the qualities they have, which is pace, the ability to go forward but on the other hand, Spurs have the tools to deal with that and Wanyama returning from injury is a big thing. If he plays, he might stem Liverpool’s flow a little and is therefore a key player.

"Spurs want a statement away win and they have the tools to do it. Liverpool are fantastic when they are at it, credit to them, the players know their jobs and it’s a risk when you play them, you can come away having been beaten 4-0 and you are asking ‘what happened there?’."

I expect a great game. It’s almost impossible to call.

The fan - 'Smithy' from Soccer AM

Adam Smith, 'Smithy' is a regular on Sky Sports' Saturday morning football staple Soccer AM and a Spurs fan through and through.

"First of all, it was an amazing win against United in midweek, I was really impressed with how we approached the game. There are a lot of players who have gone under the radar - Christian Eriksen has been fantastic, Heung-Min Son, I must have said for the last two years that Sonny is the most underrated player in the Premier League, Jan Vertonghen at the back as well. There are so many moving parts to this current Spurs team.

"I will be honest though, going into these fixtures against United, Liverpool and Arsenal, the Liverpool away fixture worries me the most, just because of how good they are going forward. Jurgen Klopp’s phrase ‘rock and roll football’ couldn’t be truer. At the back, there are holes to be exploited but they do have a lot of attacking prowess going forward.

"I think the first goal will be crucial. Both teams will come out flying and it will be a great game for the neutral. I also think it will high-scoring because there are so many attacking threats on show, but that first goal is so important. We saw it in the game against Liverpool at Wembley (our 4-1 win in October), we scored first, that made Liverpool attack even more and that played into our hands because it allowed us to really get into their back line playing counter-attacking football. I hope we start as well as we did against United, hope we get the first goal and we need to get at that back line. I think both teams will score and we’ll get something out of the game – my heart says 2-1 win, my head says 1-1, but my heart always overrules my head when it comes to Spurs!"

Eriksen on the ball is key - and we’ve got to be rock solid at the back.
