We have learned a lot - Hugo

Lloris on Champions League progress

Hugo Lloris believes we have learned a lot from our journey so far in this season’s Champions League.

We secured qualification for the knockout stages of Europe’s elite competition with a 1-1 draw against Barcelona on Tuesday night - but it took an almighty effort to seal our progression.

We were left with a mountain to climb after taking one point from our first three games in Group B.

However, resilient performances in Wembley triumphs over PSV and Inter put us back in contention to advance to the next stage. We needed to match Inter's result against PSV and did just that thanks to Lucas Moura's late goal at the Nou Camp.

The group stage was a battle of endurance, but we persevered to advance to the last 16 - a tenacity that our skipper believes will be vital for the team going forward.

We know it’s part of the process - we are a young team and to have ambition you need to learn through different situations

“This is where we want to be," said Hugo. "We knew it was going to be a big task to go through - even more after two games, even more after three games.

“Every season we try to improve, and this is what we’ve done in the last few years. Step by step, we are building something strong and we’re looking forward to being in the next stage of the competition.

“We know it’s part of the process. We are a young team and to have ambition you need to learn through different situations.

“We’ve shown already our character and personality in the last few seasons and even this season in the Champions League. It’s necessary to compete in that type of game for the development of the Club and the team and now it’s very interesting to be in the next stage. We’ll wait for the draw and look forward to the next game.”

While delighted with the result in Spain, Hugo believes we could have taken even more from the game, but the French skipper admits we have to be thankful for the efforts of PSV in Italy.

“This game was the final chance and we could have won it because we had given such great performances,” he added.

“It’s true their goalkeeper made a few important saves in the game. We conceded an early goal too. We had to deal with that, but we stuck with our principles and our basics and our philosophy.

“Yes, we lost a bit of confidence in front of goal when the keeper started to make one save, two saves... you start to think about it a little in your mind, but Lucas made the difference after a great delivery from Harry.

“Thankfully for us, PSV did the job too in Milan. It couldn’t have been possible without their help and we’re very happy with that.”
