His experiences in our latest Europa League campaign are among Zeki Fryers’ favourite moments of his career to date.
Our versatile defender started six European games and stepped off the bench in a seventh during our recent run to the last 16 of the competition.
That tally includes his involvement in the dramatic second leg ties against FC Dnipro and Benfica in the knockout stages, in which the 21-year-old made some vital contributions as we rallied bravely after suffering first leg defeats.
But with those stirring displays now in the past, Zeki plans to take his experiences into our 2014-15 campaign in a bid to make a bigger impact on the continent.
“I’ve been involved in some important games in Europe this season and I’ve enjoyed the experience,” said Zeki, who was utilised at left-back for the most part while also doing a job alongside midfielder Sandro as part of a makeshift central defence in our trip to Benfica.
“I remember getting the assist for Ade’s winning goal when we came back to beat Dnipro at home – that was a great moment. I remember I switched it to him, he took it down and slotted it past the keeper. He’s really shown what it takes this season.
“Then we had that tough game in Portugal with Sandro and I at the back. We obviously weren’t used to playing there together but we just got on with it and concentrated, focussed and it felt like I’d played there with him for a long time.
“I think I can now take all these positives into next season and see what happens.”
