Young XI impress in defeat

Our young Spurs XI team was left to rue missed chances as they lost Tuesday's friendly at Birmingham City.

Our young Spurs XI team was left to rue missed chances as they lost Tuesday's friendly at Birmingham City.

Three of our First Year Academy trainees featured in the second half of a competitive encounter in tricky conditions at Birmingham's Wast Hills Training Ground.

The Blues opened the scoring after 25 minutes but it took just five minutes for David Hutton (pictured right) to equalise with a fine strike from outside the box.

The game turned in a two-minute spell midway through the second half when the home side scored twice to take a 3-1 lead.

However, the lads fought back to create - but ultimately miss - a host of chances in the final quarter.

Academy manager John McDermott reported: "The pitch was heavy and it was windy but given those conditions it was a good football match.

"Birmingham has three or four first-team squad members involved so that was great experience for our younger lads.

"Nathan Byrne, Dean Parrett and Josh Ekim had all trained with the reserve group this week and it was great to get them involved off the bench.

"We started well and missed a couple of chances before they scored - Yuri Berchiche with a header from David Hutton's set-piece and Alex Olsen had a one-on-one saved.

"They went ahead via a free-kick bundled in but we soon equalised via David Hutton's effort from outside the box.

"Birmingham had a passage of play in the second half when they scored twice in as many minutes, we soon recovered our rhythm and created a number of chances but we weren't clinical enough."

Troy Archibald-Henville, back from his loan spell at Norwich, played 75 minutes alongside Dorian Dervite. "Troy was impressive," added John. "He was probably the pick of the bunch with David Hutton and Danny Hutchins, but they all did well."

Spurs XI: Jansson (L Butcher, 50), Mtandari, Berchiche, Archibald-Henville (Byrne, 75), Dervite, Hutchins, Maghoma (Ekim, 60), Fraser-Allen (Parrett, 47; replaced by Maghoma, 80), Hutton, Daniels, Olsen.
