Xtra - Olympic hero loves the Lane!

25 September 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Olympic medallist Anthony Ogogo swapped Las Vegas for the Lane – but he wasn’t complaining.

The middleweight boxer was scheduled to appear on the undercard of the recent Mayweather/Alvarez showdown at the MGM Grand.

Instead, he was at the Lane to watch us beat Norwich City after a picking up a niggling injury.

“I didn’t want to train through an injury, potentially making it worse and then perhaps not boxing that well,” he explained.

"Obviously, if you can’t train well you can’t box well. It was a massive opportunity for me on a massive card with the whole world watching and the last thing I’d want to do is put in a poor performance, because first impressions are so important, especially in America. This is a great way to take my mind off it!”

Anthony, although not a Spurs fan, a big football fan in general, revealed that he loved the atmosphere at the Lane.

“I’m a massive sports fan, friendly with Michael Dawson, friends with some of the Norwich players as well, so luckily enough I managed to come along to this game,” he said.

“It’s brilliant to be here and I’ve been to White Hart Lane a few times, the last time was when Spurs beat Swansea last season. It’s a great stadium.

“Michael Watson was my favourite boxer back in the day and obviously he fought Chris Eubank here, that’s when I first got to know about White Hart Lane. I fell in love with London all over again when I came down for the Olympics and to box in a stadium like this would be a dream for me.”
