XI miss out

Our Spurs XI team lost by the only goal against Crystal Palace in a friendly at Spurs Lodge on Tuesday.

Our Spurs XI team lost by the only goal against Crystal Palace in a friendly at Spurs Lodge on Tuesday.

Tim Sherwood fielded a younger team than of late. Stipe Pletikosa started in goal but only three outfield players in the line-up had league experience - Jonathan Obika, Dean Parrett and Simon Dawkins.

Clear-cut chances were few and far between in a competitive encounter.

Pletikosa was at full stretch to turn away Jonathan Williams' 20-yarder with Alassane N'Diaye heading wide from close range from the resulting corner.

At the other end, Dawkins fired wide from Zaine Francis-Angol's cross and Obika shot straight at Wesley Foderingham.

Into the second half, Jake Nicholson curled a free-kick just over and Dawkins had a header cleared off the line.

Palace grabbed what turned out to be the winner in the 63rd minute when Nathaniel Pinney converted Kieran Djilali's low cross.

The visitors had the better of the chances after that but were thwarted by a couple of fine saves from Mirko Ranieri, on for Pletikosa at half-time.

"It was a good exercise, a decent game played at a good tempo," said Tim, our Technical Co-ordinator.

"We went with a younger team and they did alright. These matches are played for different reasons but the main reason is for these younger lads to learn the game.

"You try different things and try to educate the players. For instance, we played Ryan Fredericks outside Nathan Byrne on the right and asked him to look after the right side on his own. We think he can do that but, at times, he needs to show a discipline to his game. He did that and, for me, he was the pick of our players."

Spurs XI: Pletikosa (Ranieri, 46); Byrne, Durojaiye, Lancaster, Francis-Angol; Fredericks (Pritchard, 75), Parrett (Waller Lassen, 65), Nicholson, Luongo; Obika (Oyenuga, 65), Dawkins.
