World Cup 2014 - Sandro checks-in from Brazil

Sandro has told us about the anticipation in Brazil ahead of the World Cup – and how he expects a 'beautiful' game in tonight’s opener.

Our popular midfielder unfortunately missed out on a place in Brazil’s squad for the finals but is back home in Riachinho, approximately 300km from Brasilia, and looking forward to watching the tournament with his family and friends.

The hosts take on Croatia in the first match in Group A, kicking-off at 9pm UK time at the Arena de Sao Paulo.

Sandro says he will keep a close eye on his friend and team-mate Paulinho - expected to start for Brazil - and the former Spurs contingent in the Croatia ranks.

“Everyone here is waiting for kick-off,” said Sandro, speaking to us on Wednesday night. “It’s a big day for us and everyone is excited to watch this game. Everyone will watch and support Brazil.

“Croatia are a good team but I think Brazil will win. We are very strong, we play in Brazil, with the fans behind us, the atmosphere will be amazing and that will help us.

“It will be a good to watch because in this game, we have many footballers, players who can do beautiful things with the ball, who can pass and play well.

“I think it will be an open game and a great start to the World Cup.

“Paulinho is a player who plays very well with Brazil and the fans here love him. He’s a great player, I don’t have to say it, everyone knows. I’m sure we will see him pushing forward, joining the attacks.

“Luka Modric will be there, Vedran Corluka, it will be nice to watch them, it’s a long time since I’ve seen them play. Now I can watch.

“I’m in the country, where I was born, not a city, it’s small, but I can relax here, rest with family and friends. I have to relax, to enjoy this time to be strong for next season, and I’m excited to watch.

“I never get this time to relax to be with my family, so it’s sad not to play, but I’m very happy to be here. I’m a happy man!”
