World Cup 2014 - Hugo's respect

Hugo Lloris insists France will not be resting on their laurels in their final group match at the World Cup.

Ecuador provide the opposition for Les Bleus’ third outing in Group E on Wednesday evening, kick-off 9pm.

Only a big win for the South American side would dislodge France from their current first place berth, with Didier Deschamps’ men looking in good shape heading into the last 16.

But with two wins out of two to their name so far, our 27-year-old goalkeeper – who captains his nation – insists there will be no change in attitude against their second placed opponents – or against any potential knockout stage foe.

“If you go into the competition and say ‘OK, we will have some easy games’ then you’re finished,” Hugo said. “You can’t think like that.

“You know that teams will be at 100 per cent and they’re going to try to do everything to beat you.

“You have to respect your opponents and you have to go into it with ambition.”

Much coverage has been given to the form of forward Karim Benzema in France’s wins against Honduras and Switzerland, the Real Madrid striker currently the tournament’s joint second highest scorer with three goals and two assists to his name.

While recognising the importance of good individual performances, Hugo is maintaining the attitude he so often spoke about at White Hart Lane last season – it’s all about the team.

“It is important to remember that football is a collective sport,” he said. “Of course, the individual players will make the difference but if you don’t have good team spirit and show good teamwork on the pitch, it will be hard.”
