Wins for Jan and Nabil in Brazil

Sun 22 June 2014, 21:59|Tottenham Hotspur

Jan Vertonghen and Nabil Bentaleb played their part in wins for their respective nations at the World Cup on Sunday evening.

Defender Jan went on as a 31st-minute substitute for Belgium in their Group H clash with Russia, the Red Devils claiming a narrow 1-0 win thanks to a late strike from Divock Origi.

Belgium also had Mousa Dembele and Nacer Chadli on the bench as they secured their place in the last 16.

The other game in the group produced considerably more goals, as Nabil helped Algeria claim an eye-catching 4-2 victory over South Korea.

Our 19-year-old midfielder once again played the full 90 minutes in the centre, seeing a lot of the ball in the first half in particular as his nation built up a three-goal lead through Islam Slimani, Rafik Halliche and Abdelmoumene Djabou.

Son Heung-Min pulled one back for South Korea shortly after the break before Yacine Brahimi restored Algeria’s three-goal lead and Koo Ja-Cheol completed the scoring for their opponents.

There’s more Spurs interest at the tournament on Monday evening as Paulinho’s Brazil take on Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s Cameroon in Group A, kick-off 9pm.
