Nabil Bentaleb helped Algeria get off to a winning start at the African Cup of Nations as they came back from a goal down to beat South Africa 3-1 on Monday evening.
Our 20-year-old central midfielder completed the full 90 minutes for his nation, putting in a solid performance and sending a series of useful balls forward throughout the game.
From one Bentaleb cross during the first period, attacker Islam Slimani saw his header blocked as he sought to break the deadlock.
It was South Africa who opened the scoring six minutes after half-time through Thuso Phala, before Tokelo Rantie missed the chance to double his side’s lead when his penalty struck the crossbar.
An own goal by Thulani Hlatshwayo got Algeria back on level terms, however, and they went on to win the game with further goals from Faouzi Ghoulam and Slimani.
Top of Group C on goal difference, Algeria face Ghana on Friday.
