There were mixed fortunes for our Development Squad at the National Under-21 Tournament in France on Saturday.
Josh Onomah fired home to give us a 1-0 win against Lorient, before we slipped to a 2-1 defeat against EA Guingamp in our second outing of the day – Ruben Lameiras on target from the penalty spot.
The results followed on from the 1-0 reverse we suffered at the hands of Olympique Marseille in Group B on Friday.
Our quest to register our first victory at the competition in Ploufragan got off to a fine start, as Onomah put us ahead 10 minutes into our clash with Lorient after Shaq Coulthirst’s effort was saved by the French side’s goalkeeper.
Both sides then had chances as a close game was played out, with Marvin Gakpa going closest to bagging an equaliser for Lorient when he fired marginally wide of the post 10 minutes from time.
Spurs (vs Lorient): Glover, Ball, McQueen, Winks, Carter-Vickers, Lesniak, Lameiras, Onomah, Coulthirst, Miller, Oduwa.
Needing a comfortable victory in our third and final group game to progress into the latter stage of the tournament, we fell behind against EA Guingamp after 11 minutes when Sullivan Martinet slotted home.
We were thrown a lifeline seven minutes later, though, when Daniel Akindayini was fouled in the penalty area and Lameiras stepped up to restore parity from the spot.
However, it was Guingamp who were able to edge back in front when Garcia scored from a free-kick on 25 minutes and despite a period of pressure at the start of the second half, as well as Lamerias testing the opposing goalkeeper shortly before full-time, we were unable to find a way back into the contest.
Spurs (vs EA Guingamp): Glover, Walker-Peters, McEneff, Miller, Ball, Walkes, Sonupe, Winks, Akindayini, Obika, Lameiras.
We will round off our involvement at the tournament with a play-off match against Auxerre on Sunday, kick-off 10.45am local time.
