Win all-important - Jan
Jan Vertonghen was quick to stress the importance of the win after his fine strike put Swansea to the sword on Sunday.
The defender showed a striker’s instinct to volley home the winner from Kyle Walker’s free-kick in the 75th minute as it finished 1-0 at the Lane.
It was a goal worthy of a dominant performance where we’d enjoyed 61 per cent possession against a team renowned for keeping the ball and had 24 efforts on goal.
More than anything though it secured a fourth win in five games and got us back on track after a run of three-successive victories ended so disappointingly at Everton last weekend.
“It was a great feeling to score the goal but the most important thing was the win,” said Jan, who now has a Premier League goal to his name after his deflected strike at Old Trafford was given as an own goal.
“It was a very important win for us, moved us back into the top four and it was great to bounce back after such a disappointing loss last week.
“Swansea can play and everyone knows it. They are a good team but we didn’t give many chances away. We stayed strong, kept a clean sheet and created a lot of chances
“It was great that my goal went in but I’d have preferred it if we’d scored a bit earlier!
“We were determined to bounce back and I thought we played well.”
