What the Papers Say: Dec 2-8

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Keeping an eye out for Spurs links in the daily tabloid press...

A number of papers pick up on Glenn Hoddle talking about the days of £30m tranfsers 'being over'. The Mail links us with Ilie of Alaves while other links include Figaroa of Rosaria in the Mirror and Les Ferdinand to Manchester City in the People. The NOTW says Steve Clemence is unhappy not featuring. There are larger features on Kasey Keller in the Times and John Gorman in the Independent.

The Mirror reports that Teddy Sheringham is ready for another year in the game.

Ben Thatcher says he's unhappy at being dropped in the Sun while in the Mail and Express say Dean Richards is worth an England call.

The Mirror and Sun suggest Les Ferdinand could be on his way to West Ham, the Star report that Antony Gardner doesn't need a knee operation and Gus Poyet's suggestion that next season could be his last finds it's way into a few papers.

The Star links us with Argentinian striker Luciano Figueroa. The paper claims his club Rosario Central have confirmed that Glenn Hoddle has made inquiries about the £7million-rated 21-year-old.

Leeds, Blackburn and Southampton are also said to be keeping a check on the player.

Meanwhile, Steffen Freund tells the Express that it's good for us that Teddy Sheringham is not currently part of England plans.

The Daily Mail says Tottenham have turned down Portsmouth's bid to sign Les Ferdinand on loan before the transfer window opens. The snippet goes on to report that we are linked with Marcelo Salas of Juventus and would be more receptive of a bid for Les if we land the 27-year-old striker.

The Star takes up the Ferdinand theme, suggesting that Glenn will not do business regarding the striker's move until the window. "We have five games in 12 days over Christmas and I might need to rest players and cover for injuries," Glenn is quoted as saying.

The Sun also makes a play on the fact that the £75m Project Finance facilities secured by the club last week is not intended for the purchase of players. The report suggests that Glenn was planning to chase Gareth Barry of Aston Villa.

Harry Redknapp's reported interest in Les Ferdinand finds its way into the Sun, Star, Mirror and Times.

A couple of snippets around this morning, along with reports on Saturday's 1-1 draw with Birmingham at St Andrews.

The Express suggests that Glenn is on the trail of striker Marcelo Salas of Juventus. The Chile international is reportedly unhappy in Turin and the report speculates that Glenn is interested in a loan deal.

In the Mail, Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp is quoted as revealing his interest in Les Ferdinand and Tim Sherwood.

"Les would be the one for me without a doubt," Redknapp is quoted as saying. "I need a frontman desperately - that is my priority. The only problem is trying to sort a deal out with Spurs and Les. I know Wolves are still interested."
