West Ham 0-1 Spurs - Mauricio's verdict

Sat 16 August 2014, 18:33|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino hailed a ‘fantastic win’ at West Ham and declared: “We always believed.”

Eric Dier capped a debut to remember with a dramatic injury time winner as we ran out 1-0 victors at Upton Park on Saturday.

We were rocked by an early red card to Kyle Naughton for handball on 30 minutes only for Mark Noble to miss from the penalty spot and although the Hammers then took the territorial advantage, Hugo Lloris was rarely troubled in goal.

The numbers were levelled up when James Collins received a second yellow card on 64 minutes and we pushed for the win from there.

Andros Townsend stung Adrian’s fingers, Hugo made a superb block from Stewart Downing, Adrian tipped wide Nabil Bentaleb’s shot and then the magic moment as Eric darted between defenders onto Harry Kane’s pass, dribbled around Adrian and slotted home.

“It was a fantastic win and I’m very pleased for the players and for our supporters," said Mauricio after his first Premier League game as our Head Coach.

“We played like a team and that is important.

“We started the game with a very good performance, 15 minutes of very good football and after that it’s true, West Ham started to play, started to create some chances but we always believed. I think the sending off was unfair to Kyle, but we never gave up.

“The late goal showed our ambition, our philosophy to always believe, to always try to win.

“It was a brilliant performance from Eric but not only him, all the team and I congratulate all the players.

“It was also important to get the three points for our supporters. They were unbelievable, they support us, that creates a good relationship with the players and helps us in the game.”
