'We're in a winning profession'

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

George Graham blasted the theory that Spurs fans put entertainment before success by stating: “We are in a winning profession.”

The point was made in Friday’s press conference at Spurs Lodge that perhaps some of the recent unrest in the crowd was down to the fact that the club had a history of playing entertaining football and perhaps that wasn’t being served up at present.

Boss George responded: “Whether you like it or not we are in a winning profession. Our priority is to win. I think it has been too long — and I said this when I first came to the club — that it has been a physcological crutch for Tottenham that we prefer to lose playing the way we want to play.

“That’s nonsense. I think the vast majority of Spurs fans want to see a winning team first and allied to that a team playing entertaining, attacking football.

“It’s a myth anyway about some of my teams. I haven’t said to Stephen Carr that he mustn’t go over the half-way line. I’m not stopping him. He’s one of the best young attacking full-backs in the Premiership and I want to encourage him to keep on going forward.

“It doesn’t bother me that my teams are seen as a bit dour. The priority is to win and the second part to that is to win playing exciting, attacking football and scoring lots of goals.

“Anyway, I’m just trying to think back to the last Tottenham team that challenged for the championship. I’m trying to think when that was. Two years on the trot under Peter Shreeves? The last title was only 40 years ago so maybe I’m missing something.”
