'We're going the right way' - Kevin

Kevin Wimmer felt Wednesday night’s game was a useful workout for our players – and has now turned his attentions to the Audi Cup in Munich as pre-season intensifies ahead of the new campaign.
Our recently-signed centre-half played the second 45 minutes against the MLS All-Stars in Colorado and contributed to a second half shutout in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
Kaka’s penalty and David Villa’s effort had given the All-Stars an early 2-0 lead, with Harry Kane pulling a goal back shortly afterwards as we slipped to a 2-1 defeat.
For youngster Kevin, who partnered Toby Alderweireld and then Federico Fazio in the centre of defence, it proved a useful opportunity to test himself alongside some of our more experienced centre-backs in a high-profile environment as we edge ever closer to the opening game of the season away at Manchester United.
“It was a very tough game, a close game, with lots of chances on both sides,” he said.
“It’s always good for me as a young player when you look to your right or left side and there are very good players next to you. You know they are also very focused during the game but they always keep calm, you always can pass to them and they always try to coach you when we are under pressure.
“For me, I always try to improve myself and with that in mind I think it was a very good test for us against the All-Stars.”
Swiftly looking ahead to the Audi Cup in Munich, in which we face Spanish giants Real Madrid on Tuesday night, Kevin believes we are on the right track as we look to prepare ourselves for the 2015-16 campaign.
“I think we had enough chances to win the game on Wednesday and I think we were a bit unlucky that we lost, but we are going in the right direction,” he added.
“We always try to improve and now we are very focused and looking forward to Munich and the season starting next week.”
