Colin Calderwood feels that the convincing 2-0 win over Chelsea will provide a welcome boost for his reserve team regulars.
Good performances have not always been rewarded with results this season and victory over Chelsea was only the second three-point haul of the campaign, which has also yielded four draws.
First half goals from Jonathan Blondel and Gary Doherty sealed the win over Chelsea, hopefully putting a marker down for the first team on Sunday. Darren Anderton, Ledley King, Anthony Gardner and Stephen Clemence all came through 90 minutes as they step up their comebacks after injury.
However, it is Colin's regular group of players that he feels will reap most benefit from the positive outcome.
"It might not mean as much to some, because some of the boys were just looking to get 90 minutes under their belts," reasoned Colin afterwards. "But for the young boys and the ones who are here regularly, it does mean something. The dressing room is a happier place when we do play well.
"The positive thing for us this year is, when we've played well and haven't won we haven't got beat. Only against Derby we suffered and we have a good case for saying we shouldn't have lost a game this season.
"I mentioned to the boys on the bench, I said 'we've never, ever been two up in 20 minutes'.
"We were bright and enthusiastic in the first half and we had some really nice moments of good play. We had one or two little sloppy things at the other end on occasions, but we did well.
"We had as strong a side as we've had all season and you could see the difference in a lot of our aspects of play - the experience and maturity of people in certain positions.
"Sometimes, even when you have that, you don't always get out of the game what you want. They certainly worked their socks off for 90 minutes and their effort has been rewarded with a win."
