'We want to prove ourselves against Anderlecht' - Toby

04 November 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Toby Alderweireld believes we have a point to prove against Anderlecht on Thursday night.

We take on the Belgian side at White Hart Lane in search of a return to form in the Europa League, having lost to the same opponents on matchday three in Brussels a fortnight ago.

Central defender Toby was as disappointed as everyone else with the manner of that performance, but he’s determined to help set the record straight in front of our own fans this time around.

“We have to win at home,” he insisted. “We have to show them who we are and we need to show our supporters at White Hart Lane that we can get three points and take a big step towards the next round.

“We were angry after the game in Brussels so we want to prove ourselves again. We let ourselves down over there and Thursday is a good opportunity to put that right and show how good we are.

“Everybody knows that we have a good squad but we have to prove that every game and Thursday is our next one.

“No matter what, we have to get the three points and we will do everything we can to get them.”

Of course, Thursday night represents our second home game in three days following Monday night’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa in the Premier League.

In the main, Toby was happy with the way we kept the Villans at arm’s length and he believes the result serves as an ideal springboard heading into our meeting with Anderlecht.

“We had a very good first half against Villa,” he said. “We didn’t start the second half at the same level but we didn’t give a lot of chances away. They shot from distance, hit the post and then there was the goal which we gave away and then they started believing. We tried to be as compact as possible and tried to be very organised.

“We knew they’d put pressure on us but when we kept the ball better they couldn’t put as much pressure on with the long balls. We were very happy with the three points, especially in a tough week like this. Now we have a win and a positive feeling to take into Anderlecht.”
