We showed what we can do - William
William Gallas was a hero of our defensive display under all sorts of pressure in the second half of Saturday’s 3-2 win at United – but he was keen to explain why the first half performance was so important at Old Trafford.
The captain led by example as we held onto our 3-2 lead in the face of attack after attack from the home side in the final 35 minutes.
However, the foundations for our first win at United since 1989 were laid in the first half when we took the game by the scruff of the neck and forged into a deserved 2-0 lead with goals from Jan Vertonghen and Gareth Bale.
“The first half was unbelievable, amazing,” said William. “We were so compact, disciplined and we played so well.
“As a player, it’s fantastic to play in a game like this, especially in Manchester because it’s not easy to win. The first half was important, that showed everyone what Tottenham can do.”
The second half exploded with three goals in little over two minutes with Clint Dempsey’s first Spurs goal key in maintaining our lead.
“We worked so hard because we wanted to win the game,” he added. “Before the game, the manager said to us that we had the opportunity to do something here, to go on the pitch, to play our football and be compact and we did what he asked us to do.”
