'We love this type of game'
Mauricio previews West Ham
22 September 2017|Tottenham Hotspur
Mauricio Pochettino says the team is ready to 'fight for every ball' as we face West Ham in our latest derby at the London Stadium on Saturday.
It will be the first of two clashes with the Hammers in just over a month after our Carabao Cup fourth round tie was confirmed for Wednesday 25 October at Wembley. It's the Premier League up first though with a 12.30pm kick-off in Stratford tomorrow.
"The mentality and atmosphere is very good and we are ready to compete on Saturday," said Mauricio. "We know very well what it means to play against West Ham. It will an exciting game, a tough game and we’re preparing to arrive in our best condition to be competitive and try to win. That’s our objective."
Mauricio's career at Spurs began with a thrilling late win at Upton Park back in August 2014 but we've been on the end of two tough 1-0 losses in our last two trips East.
Andy Carroll returned recently for West Ham and they look a strong side, as recognised by Mauricio.
"First of all it’s so important to be focused and to fight for every single ball because they are so physical, not just him (Carroll) but different players," said Mauricio. "We are strong too.
"Then, when you have the ball, you have to be aggressive going forward, to move the ball quickly and try to make it difficult for them to recover the ball easily. That will be the key. First, to be ready to fight because it will be a tough game and then, when we have the ball, to be more aggressive than them.
"They will be very motivated and we need to have the same level of motivation and aggression. That will be key in the challenge to win the game.
"We are ready, the team is ready, the players want to win and to give their best just like our fans, who will be right behind the team. We’ll translate all our energy together and try to win the three points."
Mauricio relishes these challenges. "It’s these types of games that you are always excited to play in. We cannot wait. That adrenaline is so important when you love to compete and we love to compete in this type of game."
