'We learned from last Old Trafford visit' - Jan
07 August 2015|Tottenham Hotspur
Jan Vertonghen is determined to prove our disappointing showing at Old Trafford in March was a one-off when we return to the home of Manchester United on Saturday lunchtime.
We slipped to a 3-0 reverse when we last visited the Red Devils on their patch, having secured memorable victories there in the two consecutive seasons beforehand.
As someone who featured in the first of the aforementioned wins in addition to last season’s defeat, defender Jan has experienced the highs and lows of playing away at Old Trafford.
And as we get set to kick off the new Premier League season this weekend, he’s keen to help us replicate the performances of 2012-13 and 2013-14 in a bid to open the new campaign in style.
“It’s a very tough game,” said the Belgian international, who was responsible for our early opener – which ultimately went down as a Jonny Evans own goal – in our 2012 triumph. “United are one of the favourites for the title and they will want to show that in the first game at home, but we want to do better than last season.
“It was probably our worst game of the season and their best when we last went to Old Trafford.
“I remember we’d won a couple of games before, United weren’t in their best period and we all felt very fit and confident, but it went the other way. They scored quickly and we couldn’t get close to them. We certainly learned from that game but we have to do better this time.”
Not one to dwell on the past, Jan says the players are feeling fresh and ready to give their all in 2015-16, starting at 12.45pm tomorrow.
“We go there to win like we do every game, but it’s going to be very tough,” he added. “I think we look sharp.
“It’s the first game of the season, it’s at Old Trafford and we want to show what we can do. We have a young team but everyone is a year older, a year better, a year more experienced and I have faith that we can do something there.”
