'We lack belief'

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

George Graham puts our travel sickness in the Premiership down to a lack of confidence.

Saturday’s 2-0 reverse at Aston Villa made it six defeats and a draw in seven games on the road this season. In total contrast, our home form reads played six, won five, drawn one.

Boss George pondered: “We’ve a great home record yet we’re a different team away from home. I wish I could put my finger on why. It would be very easy to sort out if I knew.

“What do you do? In any sport, what ever level you play at, if you are winning it breeds confidence and if you are losing even the top people in different fields, different sports, lose confidence quickly.

“I think there’s a lack of belief when we’re on the road and we’ve got to get back to being difficult to play against, more competitive and start from that.

“Just now we seem to be giving goals away very easily and then we’re up against it. To keep a clean sheet away from home would be fantastic.”

Villa dominated on Saturday and claimed the three points via goals in each half from Ian Taylor. The scoreline could have been worse but for the agility of Neil Sullivan, particularly in the first half, and although we enjoyed more possession after the break we created very little.

Our cause wasn’t helped by losing Les Ferdinand to concussion at half-time — an early clash of heads with Gareth Southgate actually forced Villa’s England defender off mid-way through the first half.

“We missed Les,” said George. “He does well for us with his physical presence. That’s where Villa outplayed us as well, with their physical presence. They looked stronger than us.

“Villa looked very good. I’ve no complaints with the scoreline.”
