'We have to watch out' - Kevin on Monaco test

10 December 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Kevin Wimmer says we must be wary of Monaco’s ability to counter-attack at White Hart Lane tonight (Thursday, December 10).

The 23-year-old centre-half, who featured in our 3-1 home win over Qarabag at the start of the Europa League Group J campaign, expects us to meet a particularly determined side this evening, with Monaco still bidding for a place in the knockout stages of the competition.

Having watched our October meeting with the Ligue 1 outfit at Stade Louis II from the substitutes’ bench, Kevin believes we’ll have to remain alert at the back for the full 90 minutes if we’re to keep our opponents at bay and ensure we head into the round of 32 with momentum on our side.

“Monaco are a team who are very compact in defence,” said the defender, a summer recruit from German side 1. FC Köln.

“They have some really good players and so we always have to watch out for them. We’re playing at home so they may wait for their chances and try to play on the counter-attack with the fast players that they have up front but, of course, we also want to win this game.

“It’s going to be very tough because we know Monaco have to win, but we are playing at White Hart Lane so we need to take advantage and take the three points so that we can make sure we finish the group stage in first position.”

Already assured of our place in the next round in either first or second place, Kevin believes the Europa League presents a “big opportunity” for us this term.

“Of course, we had a very tough group,” he added. “We started well, then we had two really difficult games against Monaco and Anderlecht away where we only took one point, but the win against Anderlecht at home after that was very important for us.

“It’s not easy to play in the Europa League but I think it’s possible that we can do well in the competition. We’re in a good way in the Premier League and we want to keep it up, but I think the Europa League is a big opportunity for us this season too.”
