We deserved more - Andre
Andre Villas-Boas was in no doubt that we deserved something for our efforts at Newcastle on Saturday.
Instead, a late penalty consigned us to a 2-1 defeat in our Premier League opener at the Sports Direct Arena.
We struck the woodwork twice in the first half through Jermain Defoe and Gareth Bale and created the better chances throughout but found ourselves 1-0 down through Demba Ba’s fine goal on 55 minutes.
We worked hard to get back into the game and finally levelled when Jermain struck from close range to make it 1-1 after 76 minutes.
But just as thoughts turned to perhaps winning the game, Hatem Ben Arfa was brought down by a combination of Rafa van der Vaart and Aaron Lennon and picked himself up to convert what turned out to be the winner from the penalty spot.
“I think we were the best team throughout the 90 minutes,” said Andre.
“We created good opportunities in the first half and in the second half, we had the momentum of the game on our side but let it slip for the split-second of the penalty and with the clock ticking down, it was difficult to get back.
“We have to take the positives from this game. To come to Newcastle on the first game of the season and have a performance like that means we are on the right track, so our focus will be back on training this week and improving on the things we did poorly.
“If we do that, I’m sure we’ll give our fans some satisfaction from our first home game.”
