We deserved it - Harry

Harry Redknapp felt we were the better team after beating Newcastle United 1-0 at the Lane on Sunday.

Harry Redknapp felt we were the better team after beating Newcastle United 1-0 at the Lane on Sunday.

Darren Bent's goal in the 24th minute was enough to stretch our current run to two defeats in 12 matches and six wins in the last eight in the Barclays Premier League.

It was also our fifth clean sheet on the trot in the league at home and moved us to within a point of West Ham in seventh.

Bent's goal was just reward for our dominant first half display where Steve Harper was forced to tip over two piledrivers from Tom Huddlestone, Sebastien Bassong cleared off the line from Luka Modric and Bent headed just wide.

Newcastle improved after the break and eventually threw caution to the wind with Mark Viduka, Michael Owen and Obefemi Martins all up front. However, they only created one serious chance - Martins blasted over - and our defence held solid again.

The clean sheet was maintained despite Ledley King missing out this time through injury and losing Michael Dawson to injury after 33 minutes. Alan Hutton came off the bench to make his first appearance since November with Vedran Corluka shifting successfully to centre-back.

Harry reflected: "It's another three points, another clean sheet and another good performance.

"We passed the ball well at times in the first half, we had some terrific passing movements including the goal, which was a counter-attack from our keeper. We broke and moved the ball quickly.

"They were never going to lay down and changed their system.

"They started with three central defenders and wing-backs but we were over-running them early on. We then lost Michael Dawson and that was a big blow because he looked a tower of strength.

"We had to reshuffle and they then pushed forwards on with the likes of Viduka, Martins, Owen all up there. It was hard to deal with but we kept another clean sheet so that was excellent, a terrific performance.

"The defensive record here has been incredible. At times you win 1-0 and that's what good teams do - no game is easy and you are not always going to score three or four goals."
