'We defended well - Toby on Fiorentina draw

Toby Alderweireld reckons we’ve given ourselves a solid platform on which to build after honours ended even against Fiorentina in the first leg of our Europa League tie on Thursday night.
The Belgian international, once again partnered by Kevin Wimmer at centre-back in the 1-1 draw, admitted we found it tough going in the second period at Stadio Artemio Franchi, especially after Federico Bernardeschi’s deflected effort cancelled out Nacer Chadli’s first-half penalty with just over half-an-hour to play.
Nevertheless, he felt we defended solidly as a unit in the round of 32 clash and is confident that we can secure progress into the competition’s last 16 in the return match at White Hart Lane next week.
“I think in the first half we played very well against a very good team,” he said. “Fiorentina have a very good home record so we did well in that sense but in the second half it was much more difficult, although we defended well – especially when it didn’t go our way with how we want to play.
“It’s quite difficult to defend in tough away games like this but I think the organisation was there and everybody worked very hard.
“We were very solid, the goal against us was lucky from their side but that’s the way it is. We have a good result for next week and now at home we have to finish it.”
