'We defended well' - Jan

Jan Vertonghen hailed our defensive endeavours after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Arsenal.

The Belgian international partnered Younes Kaboul at centre-half as we weathered several waves of Gunners pressure in the second half, having taken the lead through Nacer Chadli.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain did manage to breach our rearguard after some penalty area pinball 16 minutes from time, but we held on to claim a hard-earned point at the Emirates.

Jan, making his first Premier League appearance since our home defeat to Liverpool at the end of August, felt it was a job well done.

“Arsenal had a lot of possession but we defended well as a team, we worked very hard,” said the 27-year-old.

“We have a good understanding, Younes and I, and we fit together well. We dealt with the attackers but as a team we can be happy.

“It was definitely a deserved point, even though we were 1-0 up quite close to the end, as Arsenal pressed us back. But we stuck together effectively and have come away with a draw.”
