Watford v Spurs - team news

30 December 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Toby Alderweireld's potential return comes with perfect timing with both Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker suspended for the trip to Watford on New Year's Day.

Mauricio Pochettino tells us here that defender Toby is training again after a back problem and a virus and in the frame for Vicarage Road.

However, fellow defenders Jan and Kyle will both sit it out with one-match bans for reaching five yellow cards in the Premier League.

Both players are ever-present in the Premier League but Mauricio is confident whoever comes in will do the business.

"In a season over 10 months you need players who don’t play as regularly to be ready to play," said Mauricio after training on Friday. "It’s true we’ll miss them in the same way we’ll miss other players when they are injured or suspended.

"It’s about the collective effort and football is about the team, about the squad and we’re happy with our squad. We’ll miss them but be sure the players who take their place will perform very well."

Meanwhile, Mauricio had this update on Erik Lamela, who is on his way back from a hip injury. "He's recovering slowly, we’re not setting a time for him to come back but he’s recovering well and now it’s about his fitness."
