Watch five cracking goals against Liverpool at the Lane!

25 August 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Our 'brief history' series continues and as we look back at our clashes against Liverpool at the Lane, one thing is for sure - we've scored some absolute belters against the Reds! Watch five of the best below!

Our first competitive match against Liverpool was a Division One clash at the Lane on November 13, 1909. It was our first season in the top flight after promotion from Division Two. Bert Middlemiss scored in a 1-0 victory in front of 22,000.

Frank Osborne scored the first of only three hat-tricks against Liverpool in a 3-1 win in Division One at the Lane on October 24, 1925. More importantly, it was the start of a remarkable hat-trick of hat-tricks - three hat-tricks in successive league matches - that remains a unique achievement in the Club's history.

Liverpool were our final opponents of the glorious 'push and run' team's First Division championship victory in 1950-51, a 3-1 home win with Sonny Walters (2) and Peter Murphy on target. We were an unassailable three points clear before the meeting and won the title by four points from Manchester United.

Jimmy Greaves scored four in a famous 7-2 win over the Easter weekend. We played three games in four days. First up, a 5-2 loss at Anfield on April 12, then a 1-1 draw against Fulham before the spectacular nine-goal encounter against the Reds at the Lane on April 15. Cliff Jones (2) and Frank Saul also scored. Cliff tells the tale. "Bill Shankly (Liverpool manager) was in the car park afterwards and a journalist asked him 'any injuries, Bill?' and he replied, 'no injuries son, just a broken heart'"

Our first meeting with the Reds in the all-new Premier League on October 31 and a magnificent goal from Nayim on our way to a 2-0 win, Neil Ruddock was also on target.

Another spectacular effort, this time Benoit Assou-Ekotto's rocket sent us on the way to a 2-1 win on the opening day of the 2009-10 season at the Lane, August 16. Seb Bassong headed home the winner on his debut and we went on to qualify for the Champions League for the first time.

A first - for Liverpool. This time, Jurgen Klopp's first game in charge of the Reds was a goalless affair at the Lane last season.
