Harry Voss saved two spot kicks as our Development Squad beat Standard Liege on penalties in their fourth and final game at the European Under-21 Tournament in Ploufragan, France, this morning (Sunday, July 31).
The goalkeeper stepped up when it mattered after a feisty play-off encounter with the Belgian side ended 1-1.
Playing two 30-minute halves, we took the lead on 22 minutes when Christian Maghoma netted following Anthony Georgiou’s free-kick.
Four minutes later, though, the referee spotted a handball in the box and Hugo Cuypers levelled for Standard Liege from the resulting penalty.
Emotions ran high in the second half and both sides were reduced to 10 men as Joe Pritchard (pictured, above) and Standard Liege substitute Joel Kalonji saw red.
But with nobody able to forge ahead and grab a winner, the match went to sudden death penalties. Nathan Oduwa and Georgiou both scored while Voss saved Standard Liege’s first two efforts to secure a 2-0 shootout victory for us.
We finished the tournament seventh overall.
