Volksbank Cup: Academy progress to semi-final
The Spurs Academy progressed to the semi-finals of the Volksbank Cup with victories over Hannover 96 and RCD Mallorca on Saturday.
A 3-0 victory over Hannover thanks to goals from Munns, Bentaleb and Fredericks, followed by a 1-0 win against Mallorca ensured a match against Werder Bremen in the semi-finals.
A loss to Grasshopper Zurich on Friday meant that only two wins would guarantee that we would make it through to the latter stages of the tournament, and coach Alex Inglethorpe was delighted with the performances.
"I thought we were outstanding against Hannover. It had style and we were very clinical in winning 3-0. We were delighted with how the game went. That meant that we still had a tough game against Mallorca as we needed to win, and we managed to do that in the second to last minute of normal time," Alex told tottenhamhotspur.com after the match.
"It was really pleasing and we deserved it. We've been the most attacking team, and I think we've been the most adventurous, so I'm really pleased we're in the semi-final.
"It was a collective effort; everybody has made a start, everybody has contributed, and I think that the most pleasing aspect was that as good as the first performance was against Zurich, I thought the displays today were very good in a different way.
"We had to deal with Mallorca who knew that they only needed a draw and so were slow and wasted time, but we kept our cool and didn't get frustrated at all and eventually we got out reward."
A semi-final against Werder Bremen is next up on Sunday and Inglethorpe is confident of victory.
"If we can do what we know is right, and play in the way and style in which we're capable of, then I've got high hopes for us. I think it's been an outstanding achievement up to now."
