Aston Villa v Tottenham Hotspur

After their morale-boosting win over Sunderland last weekend, Spurs travel to Villa Park on Saturday to take on fifth-placed Aston Villa.

Villa manager John Gregory freely admits that despite his side's current run of good form - two wins in two games - his team is not firing on all cylinders. The Villans are in desperate need of firepower, having hit the target with just 39% of their shots this season - the second-worst rating in the Premiership.

But with chairman Doug Ellis unwilling to sanction the £12 million purchase of South African striker Benni McCarthy, Gregory will have to make do with his current strike force. This consists of Julian Joachim, Dion Dublin and Gilles De Bilde - who have amassed the grand total of four goals during the opening 12 matches of the campaign.

This may however be enough against a Spurs side who have picked up just one point from their opening six away fixtures. But with Chris Armstrong returning from injury to augment a Tottenham attack featuring Sergei Rebrov and Les Ferdinand, the north Londoners may fare better against Villa.

Indeed, if George Graham's team can produce a regular supply from the wings, then they ought to cause the Villans' defence plenty of problems. Spurs have found a team-mate with 30% of their crosses this term - four percentage points better than Villa - and if they can supply Armstrong with chances, they should reap the rewards.

The former Crystal Palace forward scored nine goals in the last 13 games of the 1999-2000 campaign, but a hamstring injury has kept him out of action until last weekend's clash with Sunderland. Armstrong made a substitute appearance in that match, scoring the winner with his first shot of the season and is rated at 13/8 to fire another goal at Villa Park.

However, Spurs may find scoring opportunities hard to come by on Saturday. They have scored only five goals on their travels this term, and Villa have conceded just three at home. The key to Villa's success at the back has been the tremendous form and intelligence of rear-guard Alpay and Gareths Southgate and Barry. Between them, the trio have made 26 interceptions this term - more than any other Premiership back-line - and they will be hoping to use this skill against Spurs to keep their fifth clean sheet of the season.

Online bookmakers SpursBET are offering odds of Evens on a Villa shut-out on Saturday, which looks an excellent bet considering their fantastic defensive record and Tottenham's difficulties away from home.

Indeed, the key to this game does appear to revolve around Villa's defence. If Graham's men can find a way past them, then they could record their first away win of the season, but if Alpay & Co. are on song, a Villa win (at odds of 4/5 ) seems extremely likely.

Matchday Referee: B Knight

Despite only officiating in five matches so far this term, Barry Knight has already handed out two red cards and 22 yellows, so Spurs and Villa's more combative players will have to watch their step on Saturday. One player in particular who should take note is Ben Thatcher, who stated "I've worked on my discipline all season, and have only had two bookings. Hopefully, I'll keep my nose clean again on Saturday" before getting dismissed during his next match against Sunderland.
