Villa 0-4 Spurs - Andre's verdict

25 September 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Andre Villas-Boas spoke about the 'great spirit' driving the team on after our fine 4-0 win at Villa in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.

Jermain Defoe struck twice to move up to fifth place in the club’s all-time goalscoring list.

Paulinho scored for the second-successive match after Sunday’s dramatic late winner at Cardiff while Nacer Chadli, back from injury, fired home his first goal for Spurs.

We had the better of it at Villa Park - 14-5 on shots, 61-39 possession - and once again, the opposing goalkeeper performed admirably as this time Jed Steer kept us at bay particularly in the first half.

Brad Friedel made one fine save to deny Marc Albrighton with the score still goalless but once JD opened the scoring in first half injury time, there was only going to be one winner – our defence making it eight clean sheets in nine so far this term.

"It was a great performance and because we have strength in depth we managed to only use three players that started against Cardiff,” said Andre.

“We had a great team out there but most of all a great team spirit and motivation.

“It was difficult. Villa were very aggressive, long balls, direct. We recognise they were struggling with injury but they gave us a hard time so we needed that second goal and fortunately for us it happened at the beginning of the second half.

“I think the team is playing very well, we have great strength in the squad but I think above all, great team spirit and ambition to do well.”
