Video special: So far, so good
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
David Buchler can barely have had time to draw breath in the last few months.
Within weeks of our new board assuming control and David becoming executive vice-chairman George Graham had departed as manager and Glenn Hoddle had returned ‘home’.
Throw in the Sol Campbell saga, Darren Anderton’s contract talks and the arrival of both Teddy Sheringham and Gutavo Poyet — with Goran Bunjevcevic waiting in the wings — and it’s no surprise that David feels that he and chairman Daniel Levy have been caught up in a whirlwind.
“A lot has happened in a short space of time but perhaps a lot needed to happen,” said David, relaxed in his office at the Lane just hours before facing the fans at the Tottenham Trust’s first forum earlier this week.
“The change of manager in a way has enabled a lot of other things to follow because in trying to bring the whole club together, in trying to promote it and enable it to go forward, I think Glenn Hoddle will be outstanding for us.
“Glenn’s an outstanding person, he is a Spurs person and as a manager he has a vision to try and position the club where the board and certainly the supporters would want it to be.”
David admits George Graham’s departure in March was a difficult time personally.
“It was certainly not what I chose,” he said. “The club had such a bad record in terms of communication and I felt that we needed to go on the front foot for the first time.
“Even if we got hammered for the explanation, I don’t think we did, there was a lot of support for George and I can understand that and a lot of questions over the timing, but we had to go on the front foot.”
Speak to David now and you cannot help but be swept away on a tidal wave of optimism.
“We will not get everything right,” he conceded. “There will be times when we’re knocked for this or knocked for that. But if we have that strength of team work and togetherness and look out for each other then I think the future could be ours, I really do.”
