Victory for England

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Michael Carrick played the full 90 minutes and Jermain Defoe just under half an hour as England secured a 2-1 win over the USA on Saturday in Chicago.

In front of a decent size crowd at Soldier Field, USA captain Kasey Keller was picking the ball out of his net after just three minutes when new cap Kieran Richardson fired in a left-footed free-kick from the edge of the area after Andy Johnson was felled by Eddie Pope.

It was not a routine afternoon's work for an experimental England side, but Carrick did his chances of future inclusion no harm with an assured display and knitted the midfield together.

The advantage was doubled a minute before the break when Richardson was played in by Joe Cole and steered the ball low past Keller with his right foot.

The USA rallied in the second period and pulled one back through Clint Dempsey on 78 minutes. Earlier substitutions saw Defoe make his entrance as well as, for the home side, one-time Spurs target Bobby Convey.

Carrick, making his first appearance since August 2001 and first start for his country, said after the game: "I am delighted, it was a good atmosphere and it is nice to get the first one out of the way and hopefully I can improve from here.

"We had to dig deep and there is a good spirit among the boys. It is a young team and many of us have played together in the under-21s. We showed good character, the second half was a bit scrappy at times, but a win is a win - especially for me in my first start, I'll take that."
