Vega: Spurs come first
English Barclays Premiership
Ramon Vega is happy to concentrate on Spurs as he waits for his next international call.
Our big central defender hasn’t played for Switzerland since 1998 but thought he might have an outside of making the squad for World Cup qualifying matches against the Faroe Islands at the weekend and Slovenia on Wednesday.
That call didn’t come but after almost a year out with injuries Vega did not seem overly concerned.
He said: “After a one-year absence and coming back from injury the first thing you concentrate is on the club you are playing for and where you get paid.
“You have to give them back what you get from them. I’m concentrating more on focussing on Tottenham.
“Of course I still have a strong desire to play for Switzerland, absolutely.
“I would never say no to my country if I was called up and the minute I am called up I will go. At the moment I’m concentrating on the club but if I get the call from the Swiss national team I would go.
“I hope I am considered for the next squad because then I will have a few more games in my legs and the Swiss coach will hopefully say I am ready to join the national team again.”
Vega has plenty to think about at Spurs though. Skipper Sol Campbell, Luke Young and youngsters Ledley King and Anthony Gardner either out injured or just returning from lengthy stints on the sidelines and this is his chance to stake his claim for a place in the side.
He added: “There is a chance at the moment because players like Sol Campbell are injured and I have to do my best out there and then I will have a chance of keeping my place.”
