Vega misses out
English Barclays Premiership
Ramon Vega is hoping for next time lucky in his bid to return to international duty. Our big defender has missed out on Switzerland’s opening World Cup qualifying match against Russia in Zurich on Saturday.
However Vega — who is scheduled to play for our reserves at Bishop’s Stortford on Wednesday night has been in regular touch with Swiss boss Enzo Trossero and revealed that he actually turned down the chance to join up with the squad.
Vega said: “I haven’t played properly for about the last three weeks so I told the coach it wouldn’t be right for me or the team to come straight back. He wanted me but I’ve had to say no. I will concentrate on Tottenham for the time being.”
A star of Switzerland’s Euro96 campaign in England, Vega has been out of the international arena for almost two years after suffering a succession of injuries. He insists Trossero’s continued interest in his progress has been a real boost.
“It is brilliant for the coach to be considering me after a such a long time out through injury," he added. “I’ve had a problem with my groin which meant I couldn’t play at Vitesse Arnhem. Maybe if I’d have played that game I would have gone but it’s been three weeks without playing so I’ve told the coach I want to concentrate on playing here first and then hopefully be ready for the next international.
“It is fantastic that they still want me. They haven’t forgotten me even though I have been injured and that makes you feel better and work better. You have to be positive and wait for your opportunity to come — it is the same with Tottenham as well.”
