Vega aiming for final year fling

English Barclays Premiership

Ramon Vega is determined to figure in the first-team picture at the Lane next season. The Swiss defender has been out for the best part of 16 months with first a broken foot - sustained in the Worthington Cup Final - followed by serious ankle problems that restricted him to just eight appearances last season.

Vega, 29, has worked overtime in the summer to get fit for the start of the season and travelled to Sweden with the rest of the first-team squad on Tuesday. With a year remaining on his contract, his attitude appears to be, if this is his last year with us, he wants to make it a good one.

"I have one year to go and I want to show everyone that I want to be here and I want to be successful with Tottenham," said Vega. "If I go next year I want to leave in a good way with good memories for both the club and for me as well.

"It means a hell of a lot to me to do that. It is my pride, my career, my football. I love this game and love this club as well.

"I came here to be successful with the club and work with the club. My personality is to work and to fight even in the bad times and I have gone through both here. I think I have shown I have always been committed to this club, there is no doubt about this. If I leave in a year's time I want to leave with many good memories and success as well."

Meanwhile, Vega reported no problems with the ankle. "Training is coming along well, we've been running a lot and I haven't felt a thing. I feel very motivated and I hope it keeps going like that for the next couple of weeks in pre-season.

What I need now is some games and hopefully I will be able to do that in Sweden. I take each day at a time, step by step."
