Clive Allen admitted he probably learned more from last night's reserve defeat at Southampton than in last week's win against West Ham.
Our development coach was encouraged by the display of his young side against a Southampton team that included six players with Premiership experience and Tunisian international Alaeddine Yahia making his debut.
Saints certainly had the edge physically but the lads stuck in there and might have got themselves back into the game at 2-0 down before the home side made it 3-0 in injury time. Ex-Spur Peter Crouch did the damage with the first two goals.
"Bizarre as it may seem, I thought it was a very good lesson and a very important part of their education," reflected Clive at St Mary's.
"I'm talking about playing against two Premiership forwards in Ormorod and Crouch and paying the price for perhaps not quite understanding what was needed in terms of the nature of the game.
"Physically it was a mismatch. It was always difficult when we entered into a physical game but when we actually played in the manner we're accustomed to and passed the ball you could see there was a lot of potential there.
"The lads hung in there especially in the first half when we could have been a number of goals behind. They understand why. They went about it in the right way in the second half and created chances, which was encouraging.
"They are very disappointed and gave everything physically. It was a very difficult game for them but I believe they will take a lot from it."
