US countdown - an old friend in New York

Thierry Henry may be King of New York’s soccer scene, but there is another familiar face who players and fans alike will be delighted to see again on the third leg of our US tour on Tuesday, July 31.

Teemu Tainio joined us from Auxerre in July, 2005 and went on to spend three years at the Lane before departing for Sunderland in 2008.

Injury restricted him to 83 appearances in all competitions including 48 starts in the Premier League.

An all-energy midfielder who showed real quality on the ball and certainly enjoyed a tackle, Teemu enjoyed some great moments at Spurs, including a substitute appearance in the 2008 League Cup trumph against Chelsea.

After spells at Sunderland, Birmingham and Ajax, Teemu joined the MLS revolution at Red Bulls in 2011 and immediately impressed, eventually playing 28 of 34 matches.

Teemu was always a larger-than-life character at Spurs and that’s how his former team-mates remember the Finnish international.

“He was an unbelievable character, no doubt still is,” said Jermain Defoe.

“I’m still in touch with him, we've messaged each other, I think Robbie Keane gave him my number.

“He did well for us. He’s a good player, strong, always put his foot in and a good passer of the ball.

“He will want to prove a point as well, you know what he’s like with his banter. It will be interesting to see him and play against him.”

Check out our freeplayer on the homepage for the views of Brad Friedel, Gareth Bale, Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul and Jermain on the match against Red Bulls.
