Under-19s make their point
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
An 86th minute equaliser from Dean Marney salvaged a deserved point for the under-19s against Chelsea at Harlington on Saturday as a feisty encounter ended up all square at 2-2.
Following a fairly even opening ten minutes, Chelsea broke the deadlock on 11 when, following a goalmouth scramble, Robert Huth benefitted from the confusion to hand the home side the lead.
Pat Holland's side responded positively, but it took until the 33 minute mark for Spurs to open their account for the day. A free-kick, swung over by Marney on the right was met by a towering Ronnie Henry (pictured) header at the far post.
Henry climbed and headed downwards from an angle with such force that home keeper Lenny Pidgeley was beaten all ends up.
The joy was short lived however, two minutes later a low cross from the right was deflected into his own net by the out-stretched boot of Ben Bowditch.
It was an uphill struggle for the boys in the second half which they approached with some vigour, and strikers John Sutton and Lee Barnard found themselves stiffled by Chelsea's towering centre-halves. Barnard was the victim of some particularly heavy challenges but, to his credit, Lee remained on the pitch and sought to prise an opening.
That opening came four minutes from time. A cross from the right was headed back across goal by Sutton. Barnard, with his back to goal, spotted the oncoming Marney and cleverly left the ball for the gleeful midfielder to smash home.
"It was an excellent game," beamed boss Pat afterwards. "Very committed, everyone got a foot in - in the right spirit.
"I said to them that it reminded me of a 'man's game', both sides getting bodies forward and the game had a good edge to it. We're going in with an under-18 side which is excellent, so I'm really pleased for them to have bounced back from last week.
"They want to play, which is what you want to see from Spurs players."
