Under-18s at Stoke - John's preview
20 September 2013|Tottenham Hotspur
Academy Manager John McDermott has hailed the continued efforts of our Under-18s players this week as they prepare for a tricky away game against Stoke City on Saturday lunchtime.
The lads have made a flying start to the season, winning four games out of four in the Barclays Under-18 Premier League, their latest triumph coming last weekend as they defeated Bolton Wanderers 2-1.
And John says he is satisfied with the way the lads have trained ahead of the Stoke game – adding that he has options at his disposal in terms of team selection.
“The quality of the training this week has been excellent,” he said.
“In terms of numbers we are in a nice but difficult position of having too many fit players.
“We’ve got, currently, 19 fit players, but we only want to take 14 up to Stoke, so we are in a nice position of choosing from a number of good players in deciding who we take.”
John praised the attitude of the squad, and added that he expects the lads’ performances to be ‘more complete’ in comparison to last week’s match against Bolton.
“You go into every game confident,” he said. “We had a very good training day at St George’s Park on Wednesday and it’s another long travel day this weekend, which hopefully will be good experience for any of those aspiring to go out on loan.
“Our expectations are, in every game, that they’ll do well individually and collectively.
“What we try to do is to set very, very high standards so they’re always aspiring to be better.
“Hopefully we can have more complete performances and better individual performances and sustain them for 90 minutes.”
