U21s kick-off busy week of internationals

09 September 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Tom Carroll, Zeki Fryers and Harry Kane are all in contention to play for England U21s on Monday night in a European Championship qualifier against Finland to begin a crucial week of international fixtures.

Tom earned his third cap at Under-21 level against Moldova last week and played a key role in the victory, providing the assist for Saido Barahino's winner.

World Cup 2014 qualifying takes centre stage on Tuesday night as teams battle to secure their place in the tournament.

Kyle Walker, Andros Townsend and Jermain Defoe are in the England squad as the Three Lions face Ukraine in Kiev. Group H is extremely tight and England need to avoid defeat to keep their destiny in their own hands; Roy Hodgson's team currently top the group on 15 points alongside Montenegro, with Ukraine a point further back on 14.

After a damaging 0-0 draw in Georgia last week, France and Hugo Lloris know that even a win is unlikely to be enough in Belarus with Spain in pole position to win Group I. Les Bleus have failed to score in their past five games but look likely to finish second in the group to advance to the play-offs.

Christian Eriksen and Denmark are in fifth place in an extremely tight Group B. The Danes are only one point off second spot and face Armenia, who secured a stunning 4-0 win in Copenhagen in June.

The Netherlands are strong favourites to win Group D but Vlad Chiriches and Romania have an excellent chance of earning a play-off spot. They sit in second place and have a chance to consolidate their position with a home match against Turkey.

In South America, Argentina sit at the top of the qualifying group with a ticket to Brazil almost guaranteed. Erik Lamela is in contention to play against Paraguay, who can no longer qualify for the tournament.

With Brazil's place in the competition secured as hosts, Paulinho may feature against Portugal in a friendly while current holders Spain and Roberto Soldado take a break from World Cup qualifying to play Chile at home in a friendly.
