U18s run ends

Our Under-18s unbeaten run in the Premier Academy League came to an end at Fulham on Saturday.

Our Under-18s unbeaten run in the Premier Academy League came to an end at Fulham on Saturday.

The unbeaten sequence stretched back to December but was ended at the eighth match after a somewhat scrappy affair at Fulham's Motspur Park training ground.

Fulham took the lead with a header from a corner in the 20th minute before Kudus Oyenuga (pictured) levelled from the spot with 35 minutes on the clock.

A couple of tight decisions went against the lads before Fulham scored what turned out to be the winner from the penalty spot. Shaq Coulthirst came closest to finding an equaliser when he struck the post late on.

Coach Alex Inglethorpe reported: "We didn't play as well as we have been and in all honesty, it wasn't the best of matches.

"The pitch was what I'd describe as a typical 'March' pitch, a bit bobbly, but the players have to get used to that and get on with it. There are no excuses.

"We started brightly and I thought we showed good intent, we moved the ball well and tried to play our football in the first 15 minutes but we ran out of ideas.

"If we'd have gone ahead in that spell it might have been different but we ended up going behind with a header from a corner. Fulham are a big, imposing side, but we're capable of defending better.

"We got back into it with a penalty after 35 minutes. Kudus Oyenuga did well initially and then Paul McBride nipped in ahead of the goalkeeper, who brought him down. Kudus slotted home from the penalty spot.

"It was 1-1 at half-time and we felt we could control the game from there but a couple of decisions went against us including what I thought looked a possible penalty when Kudus was brought down right on the edge of the box. Those things can affect results.

"Instead, we ended up defending horribly in our box and conceding a penalty which they scored to make it 2-1.

"We had a couple of opportunities after that and Shaq Coulthirst hit the post but it just wasn't to be on this occasion."
