Trust respond to 'racist' claims

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust chairman Daniel Wynne has reacted quickly to stories in this morning's press suggesting that Spurs fans are being racist by referring to themselves as 'yiddos'.

Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein and Chelsea chairman Ken Bates are quoted in a story in the Mirror warning the club that fans must be told it is not acceptable to refer to themselves in that way.

Dein said: "We see very little racism in domestic football but anti-semitic racism is an issue, particularly where Spurs fans are known colloquially as 'yiddos'."

Lifelong Spurs fan Daniel responded: "The term 'yiddos' is used affectionately as a term of endearment and a sense of belonging at Tottenham, certainly not as an insult.

"There is a high proportion of Jewish fans at Tottenham and if it was insulting, fans simply would not use it.

"It is different at some away grounds when it is used as an insult to us but that is certainly not the case at White Hart Lane.

"I am Jewish and take an acitve part in local Jewish life and I can assure you that Tottenham fans would in no way intend to insult anyone in the Jewish community."
