Travel advice - Basel

The Club has held extensive discussions with the Foreign Office and Swiss Police ahead of Thursday evening’s Europa League Quarter-Final second leg regarding their assistance to us on the issue of fan safety whilst in Basel.

UEFA has appointed a Security Officer for this match and our local Police have also held discussions with their colleagues in Basel regarding our fans’ safety ahead of this tie.

We expect there to be a Police presence both on Wednesday evening and throughout Thursday in and around the City Centre, particularly in the area of Steinenvorstadt where there are a number of shops and cafes available.

We would ask those fans travelling to read the following notes carefully and follow the guidelines below:

Fans arriving via official means, as arranged with Thomas Cook and THFC, will be dropped off at the Stadium on arrival in Basel - you will be advised where your coaches will be post match - please ensure that you make your way to the coaches immediately after the match - THFC Stewards will be on hand to direct you. As you are expected to arrive around mid-day, you can take the number 14 Tram from outside the Stadium direct to the City Centre.

For those travelling independently, Tram 14 will take you direct to the St. Jakob Stadium from the City Centre. The Tram Station is located at the bottom of Steinenvorstadt - the journey should take approximately 10 minutes. You can also walk to the stadium from this location although this can take around 45 minutes. Please note that if you are travelling after 5pm on Tram 14, your match ticket will also act as your Tram ticket.

The Stadium will open at 7:00pm (local time), two hours before kick-off, and you should make your way to Section B where THFC and FC Basel stewards will carry out searching procedures.

Fans attending are advised to enter the stadium as early as possible to avoid last-minute queues. Once inside, refreshment and hygiene facilities are available.

Please be aware that whilst we have no jurisdiction in other stadiums, our stewards will assist and advise you if required and will be on hand at the entry gates and in the seated areas. Please approach them if you have any difficulties whilst in Basel.

THFC were successful in requesting a further allocation of tickets to satisfy the demands and these are located in section A6 - please note that all A6 ticket holders should access the Stadium via gates B1-B2 and you will be redirected once inside the Stadium.

Please be aware that fans considered to be drunk or behaving in an inappropriate manner will not be allowed entry to the stadium and could face arrest.

As always, the usual prohibited items apply. All flags and banners with appropriate wording will be welcome at the stadium and these will be checked by Police and Stewards prior to entry. It is common policy and normal ground rules at football stadia in the UK and elsewhere in Europe that all flags of an overtly religious/sectarian/political nature will not be permitted and may be confiscated - please respect this request.

As with all European fixtures, alcohol will not be available within the stadium and there are no local bars in the vicinity for visiting fans.

We can advise you that as per usual procedures, you can expect to be held back for a period of time after the match and we would ask that you be patient during this hold-back as this may assist in releasing the fans earlier. For those returning to their coaches, as advised, please look for a THFC Steward who will direct you to the coach parking area.

For those returning to the City Centre, the stop for Tram 14 can be found directly outside the stadium - Stewards will direct you to this point.

The Club is rightly proud of our record of good behaviour at recent European matches and whether you are travelling as part of the official THFC package or independently, we would ask that you uphold this by respecting local amenities and culture. Please do not place flags or banners on local statues or historic monuments, including architecture, as this could offend local inhabitants.

Watch out for pickpockets in busy areas and on local transport - carry only what you require and leave all valuables in your Hotel Safety Deposit Box. Please ensure that you have the correct Travel Insurance prior to travelling.

Please ensure your passport is kept safe. In the case of lost or stolen passports, please contact the British Embassy in Berne.
