Trainees master the media
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
The club is giving its third-year Academy players a leading edge by educating its trainees in press and media studies at the London College of Printing, a constituent college of the London Institute.
Studying journalism, new media and photography, and working with national newspaper journalists, the boys will finish the pilot having a better understanding of what pressures members of the media are under, and what they themselves can expect in the future.
Gwyn Walters, Education and Welfare Officer at the Lane, commented: "We have some excellent third year talent this year and we are just as committed to educating players off the pitch as well as on it.
"Players like John Sutton (brother of Celtic's Chris Sutton) and Ron Henry (grandson of our legendary double winner of the same name) will have seen their family members experience what the media spotlight brings.
"However, our other lads will never have encountered interviews, photocalls and general demand from the media. This course gives them an understanding of what they can expect and provides a useful aide to their career."
Bill Long who is developing External Links at the London College of Printing added: "The boys have the chance to learn from former and current journalists about what is needed.
"In a lot of cases professional sports people will not realise how much pressure is on journalists and those within media to produce film or copy.
"This will give the Tottenham lads a head start before embarking on their full professional careers and hopefully allow them to understand the media in a more in-depth capacity."
The course is FA and PFA approved, and is hoped to be considered as an official further education course at football clubs across the country.
