Townsend's target

10 October 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Andros Townsend says he is keen to repay the faith Roy Hodgson has shown in him ahead of England’s crucial qualifying matches against Montenegro and Poland this week.

The young winger has been named in the senior national squad for the second time following his excellent start to the season at the Lane.

And the 22-year-old, who got his first call-up for last month’s matches against Moldova and Ukraine, says that initial experience of being around the squad for an international stint means he can approach this week’s games with confidence.

He explained: “The first call-up was kind of like going there training for 10 days, and I got to know all the players.

“Obviously I didn’t get on but it was a valuable experience, so hopefully I can go there and try and make a bit more of an impact and try and get on the pitch.

“It just shows the trust that the manager has in me to put me in the squad. It’s a vastly experienced squad; I think there’s only me and Ross Barkley that are the only newcomers of the group, so it’s great that he’s shown the trust in me, and if I get the chance I hope to repay him.”

The Three Lions have home advantage in both games, and with the knowledge that two wins will guarantee qualification for next summer’s finals in Brazil, their fate is in their own hands.

And Andros believes having such crucial games at Wembley should prove beneficial.

“You can see how good the fans were against Moldova (England’s last home game) a few weeks ago, so obviously it’s a big factor playing our last two games at home, and I’m sure we’ve got the quality in the squad to finish off the job.

“It was nice to get my first call-up last month, it was a dream come true, but the second call-up shows more the way I’ve played since the last meet-up.

“Obviously I’m delighted (to be called up) again and hopefully I can go there and try and get my first cap this time.”
